I go to an unusual school

Name: Samady
Group: A

English Writing

I go to an unusual school. How is the school unusual? My school is called the Liger Learning Center (LLC). It is located near Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia. Many students register or pick their school, but Liger picked me. LLC selected students from different province by creating tests. After the Cambodian students were selected, they received a scholarship. I was one of the students who passed the test and I came with my grandparents from Siem Reap province. LLC provides us houses to live. In the house we have RE(Residential Educator) who take care of us like our parents or family. There are four house and each house had about 12 students including day students. You know, the name Liger means lion+tiger. Not a lot of school have a name like that, they usually use acronym to stand for some words that people used, example: ISPP: International School of Phnom Penh. When we learn at Liger, we never wear shoes inside the school. It is really different from the schools I’ve visited. LLC has different classes, math, khmer, literacy, singing, after school activities is the extension that we have to play spot, or create new things, expertise can help us with our Exploration(example: Video, current event, recipe development, etc), exploration (projects that we do to explore for seven weeks and we learn two hours per day). At the end of the seventh week, we will share about our exploration to other people(this called Liger Sharation). Liger provides us laptop called ASUS to learn, or search about information. Liger has six core values, there are: Appreciation, Integrity, Determination, Optimism, Ingenuity and Stewardship. We always do assembly on Monday mornings and Friday evenings and also we have flagpole during that day day to begin our school and end the school. In assembly we talk about learning schedules, what happened in the week, and values. The food that we eat is Cambodian and Western. We have Saturday and Sunday for our relaxing day. But in those two days we also learn Karate, Khmer Dance, Hip-Hop, Frisbee, and we do fun activities like watching movies, swimming, sports (football, basketball, etc), but sometime we have homeworks to do too. I really like LLC because it unusual, I feel fresh with the environment around me because LLC has a lot of trees and plants. I really happy to have a lot of friends at LLC, they make me happy nevertheless I miss my family.

Earth Science

Name of Course: Earth Science
Learning Facilitator: Jeffrey Holte
Number of Students: 10
Days we Meet: Monday/Tuesday
Advanced Enrichment Dates: August 11-October 17, 2014
Course Description: On the first day of our Advanced Enrichment we were all so excited to study about Earth Science. Earth Science means to study about the Earth and all of the things that are related to the environment and the Earth. In our Advanced Enrichment we studied about the rocks, water, weather and all of the planets in space. In Earth Science class we not just only studied and got the theory from the teacher, we also made an experiment together in class. For example, the thing that we have been experimenting with is making the sugar crystal experiment, the erosion and some other activity. Our group helps each other and works together as a team, not work alone and always listen to the teacher. At the end of our Advanced Enrichment we all were a little bit sad because we all wanted to study more about all of the things on Earth and all of the things that are really special for the Earth.

Here is some information that I wrote about the rock. It not very good, and some of the was uncompleted but I putted it because I want to show how well I can take notes on science.

This is the rock that I had been doing research on.

Obsidian Rock

-Obsidian is the rock that have colour deep black

-it a nature rock because it glassy appearance

-When it breaked it very sharp.

-70% of the obsidian was made from silica

-Obsidian can only form near active Volcano

-Some time when the Volcano exploded the Obsidian made from that

-The best obsidian is formed underground near a volcanic vent because those rocks will have limited impurities.

-Tiny gas bubbles that trap water are a part of every obsidian rock.

-Although most rocks that form in the Earth’s crust are very old, obsidian is rarely older than 20 million years old which is young for a rock.

-Obsidian goes through a process called devitrification whereby it turns from glass to a rock.

Obsidian is commonly used during surgical procedures because it is often sharper than traditional surgical tools.( use for when the doctor treatment)

– Obsidian is used as a gemstone in jewelry.

My Final Economics Project

I have been learned economics class for eight weeks. This is the graph that I made with example of decreasing of supply. We’ve been learning about the shifter of supply and demand. There are five shifter of demand and five shifter of supply.
The five shifter of demand are:
1. Tastes/preferences
2. Number of consumer
3. Price of related goods
4. Income
5. Expectation
After learning all about this five shifter of demand, we made some example and graph too.
The five shifter of supply are:
1. Price of resources/Capital goods
2. Number of producer
3. Expectation
4. Technology
5. Taxes and Subsidies

This is my graph that I made at the end of this economics class. This show when the supply and quantity sold was decrease when the taxes increase. During this happened the price was increase and all of this made a new equilibrium point.

Entrepreneurship Description

trip to expo

  1. What do the main thing that I learned in the Exploration?

The main thing and meaningful for me to learn is Entrepreneurship is I meet a lot of challenges. It doesn’t mean that I can not solve it but it really hard. What I learned from it is I get abonded of experiences and craziest thing happened to me. I think this is the best and greatest Exploration that I ever been learned. I will always remember this group because in class I always be the latest student. I hope next Exploration I will be a good student than this Exploration. But I still worry about one thing. I will had next Exploration with Soliday again. In class me and Soliday never have something right with each other. But I don’t know why after we having a conflict, Soliday and I is be friendly again. This is our habit.   In class we always fighting, yelling and competing. That why my teacher name Kichong said no fighting, no yelling and no competing is this class. I hope that I can do that. This day is the worst day ever for me in a worst day that I been had. Soliday said that I steal her dream, I steal her work and I steal everything, I make her dream fell. Then I though of course I steal her dream, her work but I gave her dream, her work back and she not take it. How can that be impossible! When I gave to her she just said no I don’t want to do it. Now she just play Minecraft and have fun with my friend in class but it is okay because she done her work. Kichong my teacher recommend to me to be teamwork a little bit because I usually easy to angry and the most good thing for me in class is I am proactive.

2.  write the 6 terms that you think is the most important thing for you. why?
The six terms that I think it is important for me is:

  1. Leader because in class I am a leader of the group. But my action is just normal, I never manage someone to do something. It normal for me to tell them to do what.
  2. Second term is iteration. I like that because it show how you would want to know more about other people. Even they don’t tell you anything, or talking with you. You try to know more about people feeling and what they need.
  3. Third is Big goal and small goal because it show how you processing, and manage which one you should do first to achieve your goal.
  4. Forth is Resilient because I need to be commitment and strong even though I meet a lot of obstacle and I will never giving up.
  5. Fifth is Integrity, I like this because I want don’t want to lie or cheat about selling and buying product to the customer. I should being able to be honest to the customer so they will like us more and happy to work with us.
  6. Execute also my favorite one too because it is tell me to do my plan, by not just keep and keep for a long time.
  1. If I could do the Entrepreneurship Exploration again, what would you do different? what product? what team? how to sell?

If yes, I will improve my team work, I will not be an angry person and I will know other people feeling even they don’t know my feeling. I will make a new product about something that better than this(I don’t know what can I make). About the team, I would want the same team even I hate this team because I want to know more about them and I can improve myself more better than before. Selling is also important too. I will contact with the companies that related to my product like calling, emailing and more. Selling is really hard because we want to make them interested at our product.

Here is the 3D video that my group made:

 Description:

In Cambodia Tropical Forest Ecology we studied about the Ecosystems in Cambodia and all around the world. We also learned about the many Ecological Relationships in  ecosystems.

In this exploration we want to change Cambodia by giving Cambodian people the knowledge about the forest and the animals in Cambodia from our experience. We also want to protect the animals in Cambodia from the hunter also to help save the endangered animals.

Our exploration took a trip to Koh Kong to learn more about forest in Koh Kong. When we were there we went into the forest and we slept at the campsite. On our trip we walked in the forest, swam at the waterfall and slept in the forest. We also went to Mangrove forest and then we came back to Liger. We also took a trip to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center to learn about the siamese crocodile and the moon bear and sun bear. At there we met a lot of people from Free The Bears and Flora Fauna International and they taught us about the animals in the zoo.

In the classroom we learned a lot of things and we worked on projects in small groups.   Our projects were about Ecological Relationships, different biomes around the world, Food Web in Koh Kong, Makey Makey Project, and Science Museum Blog. Our highlights are to understand how important the plants and animal are. Also to know about different organizations that help the animals and to understand clearly about their goal and how can they help Cambodia.

Number of Students: 12

Dates: August 11-October 17, 2014

Meet: Thursday-Friday

Course Description: Our group learned about Physics. When we began to learn Physics we started to learn about the meaning of Physics. First we just listened to the teacher and learned about the theory of Physics. Sometimes the teacher told the meaning of important words in class. Then we started to work and learn about the Earth science. When we began to learn about Earth science teacher told us how many planets in solar system. Then the teacher mailed to us one video that showed about the new planet. Then he told us to take notes about that video. When we finished learning about that new planet we started to learn about the gravity on Earth. Then he put the work for us to do. When we all knew and understood about it he taught us about the new topics are buoyancy and density of the water. He also told us about formula how to find out the work that he put for us. So now we just learn more about buoyancy.

Asian Politics Description

Name of Course: Asian Politics

Learning Facilitator: Kimchhel

Number of Students : 9

Dates: March 30 – June 12

In our class we studied about the countries that joined ASEAN. First teacher wrote the names of the countries on pieces of paper. Then each student did the lucky draw to pick the country that they needed to research. When we got enough information we created the presentation on Prezi, Google Presentation or OneNote. After three weeks of doing the research we started to present about the country that we did research about. We talked about the flag, land and population, religion, GDP and some other things. We did some comparisons between some countries to Cambodia. For example in 2003 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than thailand but in 2014 thailand is having more trade freedom than Cambodia. Another example is in 2005 Laos having more trade freedom than Cambodia but in 2014 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than Cambodia.  After everyone did their presentation the teacher introduced more about ASEAN politics. The categories that he taught us were political systems (ex. communism and democracy), the start of ASEAN (why ASEAN started), the history of ASEAN countries (revolution from some powerful countries) and so on. ASEAN started because two reasons. One is because to prevent from war (island conflict) and another reason because to block communist influence (Cold War). In about 19th century France there was a revolution to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and more but not Thailand because they talked with England that Thailand is the border of the country that they do the revolution on. Moreover teacher also taught us that ASEAN divided into two parts. One is Indochina (Thailand, Burma) and another one is Malaysa (island country).

I got Lao as my country to present.

This is the prezi I made for Lao Presentation

Refuse Plastic Description

WIN_20140606_142530 (2)
The bag I made from Pastic

Our exploration learned about refuse plastic. We learned about refuse plastic because we see in Phnom Penh that there is a lot of plastic bags. Plastic is everywhere around Phnom Penh. So we want to reuse the plastic waste.

See this presentation to find out what we had done!

In the first week we started to talk about the plastic. We talked about the things we know about plastic, what we want to know and what an idea or wonder is that we have. When we talked about this already, one person volunteered to write down a note.

When we do that already Max told us to do an experiment about the waste that we make in one week. He gave us one plastic bag. We shared our ideas, our thinking about how much we making waste in one day or one week. So after one week we shared all the rubbish and collected it together.

My understanding is that all the rubbish can be reused, reduced, and recycled. My challenge was that I forgot to take the rubbish bag with me all the time and sometimes I forgot about putting the rubbish in my rubbish bag. This assignment changed my behavior because I can remember that if somewhere there is not a rubbish bin I can put it in my pocket or in my rubbish bag. It surprised me that I can know how much rubbish I make in one day because all the time if I have rubbish I always just throw it in the rubbish bin. But it was less than the rubbish that I thought it would be. The rubbish that is necessary is 30% and the rubbish that I don’t need is 70%. Now I know that I need to change my behavior in the future. That means I do not forget about the things I need.

We also learned about the problem when burn, bury, throw away and landfill. The problem of burning the plastic is, it can make Co2. When Co2 goes to the atmosphere it can increase the climate change. It can make the greenhouse effect if we burn a lot of plastic. When the Greenhouse effect happens we can not get a lot of energy from the sun. The Sun gives us 100% of energy; we just get 70% of the energy and 30% bounces out to the universe. Another problem is when we burn the plastic it makes toxic gas. Toxic gas is very bad for us. It can make us headache, or heart problem, cancer, weakness, and mutation. Mutation means that you will get two heads or three arms like that. Bio accumulation is the problem too. It changes people’s hormones. When we burn the plastic it changes people’s hormones because it can make you fat or change our body. The problem of bury is polluting water and bad for soil. Plastic has chemicals. When we bury it the chemicals go into the soil so the plants can not grow on that soil.

The problem of landfill is it use a lot of space and is expensive to do. When we put the rubbish in the landfill it can kill the animals because animals come to eat that plastic. The rubbish in the landfill will make methane gas because the organic waste does not decompose. Methane gas is the gas that is 21 times more dangerous than Co2.

The problem of throwing the rubbish away is it will clog the drain. It means when the plastic is in the drain the water can’t go through so it will became flooded. Also it is related to the tourism because when tourists come they see a lot of plastic and they think that Cambodia is not the good place because it has lots of plastic at the road and everywhere. Sometimes it is dangerous for the people because when the people use transportation by motor or car, the wind will blow the plastic to their face so they can’t see anything. When we throw the rubbish it will make the mosquitoes because mosquitoes like to live in the dark place and have the water. We all were understanding the problem so we started to do more research about it.

This is the prezi I made for the effect of burn, bury, throw, incinerator and landfill.

Trip

Now let me talk about our trip. On Friday, 16th June 2014, my refuse plastic team went on a trip. On the trip we went to BKK (Boeung Keng Kong) market, City mall market and Cintri. We went there because we wanted to interview, survey, and do observing. We prepared our questions on Thursday to help us do that work. When we arrived there we split into teams. We interviewed and surveyed the sellers and the buyers. They talked about the plastic. They said sometimes plastic is good for us to carry thing like clothes, shoes, plates…. . But sometimes it is not good for our health because plastic has chemicals and when we put the hot things like porridge it can make the plastic get thin so it is easy to tear. When I went there I felt happy but sometimes I felt scared because I didn’t know the people that I asked. My highlight is that I could interview the people and know more ideas from them. When we finished we went to Olympic Stadium at 12:00pm to eat lunch. We ate breads and cookies. When we finished eating we met together and did some reflection. At 01:35pm we went to Cintri to ask questions about plastic. We arrived there at 2:05pm. The staff at there took us to the conference room. When we met one man he introduced himself. Later one man came and told us about the plastic and about their company. Cintri is the company that goes to collect the rubbish outside in the city. Cintri’s challenge is that when they go to collect the rubbish the people don’t organize their rubbish so it is hard for them to collect. Another thing is that when they go to collect the rubbish it is hard for them to push the trash when there is sand on the road. Sometimes when the people have a celebration or party they just throw the rubbish away. It also showed about people’s behavior that they don’t respect the rules, they just follow other people. If one person puts the rubbish not organize then other people will do that too. But now Cintri tries to make rubbish bins for putting the rubbish and tells the people to have good behavior. People can change their behavior by respecting the rules and helping change Cambodia by not throwing the rubbish away.

This is the prezi I made for our trips.

In class

In class we interviewed the people about the plastic. They came to our school and taught about the plastic to us. One man tried to make the community people understand about plastic. Another man talked about the plastic too. He tried to make us know more and we asked questions to him.

Next we started to learn about solutions about plastic waste. Our solution was reduce, reuse and recycle. But next lesson we learned about 5D. Next we did research and to solve that problem. Now we started to make things. Next we started to develop and tried to deploy. It means we need to reduce the plastic. We need to use less plastic. You can buy the reusable bags for putting things when you go to the market. When we have a lot of plastics we need to reuse them by making some things like bags and flowers. When you reuse the plastics it is better than you taking the plastics to throw away. You can recycle the plastic if you can’t use it again by bringing it into the factory. It is a very good thing that you need to reduce before reuse, do reuse before recycle and do recycle before throwing it away.

After we learned about reduce, reuse and recycle we started to do a survey in the Liger community. When we went there we divided in four groups. When we surveyed, a lot of people said they burned the plastic or threw away. The organic waste they will not compost. People just threw away that waste to everywhere. They didn’t know when they threw the rubbish it would affect the environment. But in the community people like to use the reusable bags when they go to the market.

Prezi I made for the 3R

When we came back we started to reuse the the plastic. So we started to make something new from the plastic like bags. I wanted to do this because I want to help and reuse plastic because Cambodian people now are using a lot of plastic and don’t care about the environment in the future. When I do this I can put my money or my pencil in it. People want it because I made a design and the importance of my ideas are that it was made from plastic. So I can reuse plastic and help the environment to be good.

How to make a bag from recycle plastic!

If you want to make a bag you need to have plastic, scissors, needle, thread, iron and some of the pictures on the plastic. The first step is we take the plastic and then cut the bottom and the handle of the plastic out. After you cut already you can take it to iron. You can make your bag five to six layers. If you have the big plastic you can iron and iron it again for six layers because we want it to be strong. When you iron you need to be careful because the iron is so hot. Also if you want your bag to look really nice you need to make the plastic smooth when you iron. Next is you bend it for three layers. It means you can bend any style. For me I bend the long one to the top and then I make the space for their lips. When you bend already you take the needle to sew the two sides of the bag. You can sew any style. When you sew already you can cut the pictures from the plastic to put on the plastic to look nice. To do that you can take the picture and then put it on your plastic so you iron it with plastic because when you iron, the picture will stick on your bag. If you want to make the button, you put that button and sew it on the lip of bag. When you did that finished you can take the scissors to cut the two slits at the front side of the bag. So you can take the string to tie it with the two slits like the circle and then you can connect it with the button. So you can have a nice bag for putting your things.

When we did that already we sat and talked about our reflections to friends about doing this project. I appreciated to everyone in my refuse plastic class that they worked hard and tried to wait for the iron.

IMG_20140603_153053 (2)

After that me and my two friends started to work on the presentation to share to all Liger students and the staff in Liger school. When we did the presentation we felt like scared because we didn’t learn so much about the plastic and also other presentations they learned already so it is hard for me. But it is okay I was very happy to share my ideas to other people and show that Liger is the good school to teach the lesson.

Advanced Khmer History Description

Name of Course: Advanced Khmer History

Learning Facilitator: Darath

Number of Students: 10

Dates: Oct. 20 – Jan. 16

Days we Meet: Monday and Tuesday

Description: In Liger we learned about Khmer History. We like to learn Khmer History because it talks about Khmer Rouge. Khmer Rouge was the one story that we remember all the time and it very sad for Cambodian people to hear all those things. Before we started to learn about Khmer Rouge teacher divided us into two groups. One group had to write about what we know about Khmer Rouge and one more group had to write about what we wanted to know more about Khmer Rouge. When we wrote maybe 10-15 minutes we switched each other. Thing that we wanted to know was how many people were killed during Khmer Rouge and thing that we know is Khmer Rouge kill the people who have knowledge and the people that have a good life because they don’t want the good people to come against them. After one day we  picked a partner and did research about Khmer Rouge. Teacher said to us you need to pick lucky draw. It means he wrotethe questions on the paper and tell us to pick. My team picked “How was the process of education, health, economics, religion and international relations after victory of Khmer Rouge?” So when we had that question we needed to do research and write on the paper to make a post. When some words were hard for us to understand we asked friends or teacher. We wrote the hard words on the paper and explained to make other people understand too. At the end of the class we shared our research and what we learned in class. We did the research by website Wikipedia, and the information from teacher that he gave us a recording voice from radio. We did that until we finished and we can do presentation to our friends and teacher. We learned Khmer Rouge told the people to work for them and who not work for them they will kill the people. But when they kill the people they not said you come here I want to kill you, they said come on I take you go to learn. So when Khmer people thought that now I can learn now but when they go other people never saw the people that went to learn come back. Also Khmer Rouge killed teachers, doctors because they didn’t want the people to have knowledge. But some people that good and had knowledge are still alive now because they hid their identity so no one knew. The religion is that Khmer Rouge tell Cham people to eat pork. So Cham people hard to eat because it is wrong with their religion. The relationship of Khmer Rouge is they had with China, North Korea, Egypt, Albania, Cuba, Laos, Vietnam (until December 1977), Romania and Yugoslavia. China is the main backer of Khmer Rouge. Then we began to learn more about Khmer Rouge. When we were in class we learned about the process of Khmer Rouge beginning. The beginning of Khmer Rouge was called Communist Party Cambodia (CPK). They started at 1940. When Lon Nol had the relationship with America he told that country to put the bomb so when Khmer people saw their family die or lost the member so they very angry. When CPK saw that they told the people to join their party to against with Lon Nol for helping Sihanouk. CPK said that because the people like Sihanouk so they will join CPK to help Sihanouk. When CPK had a lots of people in their party they began to go against with Lon Nol and America by the Scholars that support from Vietnam and the Cambodian people too. Also the leader of CPK named Salat Sor. So when CPK won the people wanted to join and work for CPK. When 17, April,1975 the CPK are successful. So Sihanouk named them Khmer Rouge. After the Khmer Rouge won the people in Cambodia had no more food, no more clothes, no more family because Khmer Rouge evacuated their family to another place and made them separate. Khmer Rouge wanted to kill the people by accuse them like ex: people not pick the fruit from the tree but they accuse you pick the fruit and then they take that person to kill. One more thing is that they told the girl and the boy meet together and said you need to love this guy. So people needed to do what the Khmer Rouge said. three years, eight months, 20 days have three people help the Cambodian to have a freedom. Their names were Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, and Chea Sim. They supported by Vietnam. So after that Khmer have a better life and no more pressure and have a freedom.
