Liger Pride Yearbook

In this team, I worked on writing, designing, editing and creating a yearbook. This Exploration used to have since the first year of year-4 Liger school. This yearbook will give to each one of us and we can share this book to our family and friends. We have many sections in the yearbook such as Exploration, Essential, Expertise, ASE, Events and etc. I hope this yearbook is the book that helps everyone to remember their year in Liger.

Project Evaluation

All team members

Project Evaluation is the first Exploration that I ever known. I learned with other 4 students and two mentors in Phnom Penh coming from Sevea. In this Exploration we evaluate the PBL and STEM projects that were implemented to the government school. Learning about project evaluation is really hard than what I was thinking before arriving Sevea. Before evaluate something, I have to learn about the criterion of evaluation. To consider the project that is success or not, we need to focus on three criterion, Relevancy, replicability and the Result/Outcome. Our mentors had given us many examples to explain all of this criterion, it is kind of hard to understand too. After we understand all the criterion, we started to make questions for it so we can interview the teachers, students and the headmasters at the government school. One of the example of our questions is:
Relevancy
Have you been blocked from the project because lack of equipment/time/transportation or logic needs?
After we learned all the criterion, we started to make a lot of questions to ask the headmaster, teachers and students at the government school. We went to two different government schools. One is in Phnom Penh and another one is in Kratie. On the 18th of March, only two of the project evaluation members were visited the project in Phnom Penh focus on the Waste topic (extra topic that Liger gave).

Students’ products were turn out pretty good! They are very ingenuity, and even though they were not brave but their presentations were really good and enough for us to understand. There are many projects that the students did such as Biology (plants), Physic (Potential and Kenetic energy), History, Moral Civic Education (Women’s roles in Khmer society) and Earth Science (Waste- extra topic). The challenge during the interview with the students is that the students didn’t understand our questions. Sometimes I got mad because I tried to explain very hard but they still don’t understand.

During students' interview
During students’ interview

Well, there are 2 Explorations (Project Evaluation and Project-based learning (PBL) STEM that went to the government schools. We went there twice too see the opinion of the teachers with the project like did the teachers think the project will bring positive impact for the school(Field visit 1)? And for the field visit 2 we’ll ask the teachers this same question again to see is the teachers think the project will bring positive impact for the school.

IMG_0376 DSC_1885

After we got all the data, we put it into the spreadsheet program. This job is kind of complicated, sometimes we lose our data and sometimes there are errors with the spreadsheet. But we all tried our best to complete the task. Not only filling the data base but we anylize the data. Right now we still not finish the analyzing yet because we didn’t have enough time, but we’ll still continue it until it finish and ready to present to the ministry of education.

My challenge in this Exploration is that I need to learn about the concepts of project evaluation, making questions, interview, filling the data base, analyze the data, writing a report and then will present to the ministry. This is very big experience for me because I got to learn a very unique Exploration and I can use this for the next projects in the future.

Even though we are the Liger students and we want the PBL and STEM projects to be in the government school, but we need to be in the middle. It means that we need to take others people’s opinions (students, teachers and headmaster) and analyzed follow the data and present to the ministry.

Though the Project-based learning works really well in Liger, but there are still problems with the government schools such as the teachers afraid that the government lessons will not finish on times, students busy with their family work/tests in school. Or the teachers are busy with the other jobs or too much students in the class.

DSC_1876

But there are also positive results coming out of our analyze (first result- we’ll change with further data collection and analyze) that the students show creativity with their presentations, almost 100% of the teachers and students wanted to repeat this project again, almost no money and time resources needed for the implementation and the success conditions of teacher involvement, students’ independent works, the grade number (10th graders were better at doing the project), and teacher quality of understanding and following the students’ project.

Students are acting.
Students are acting.

I hope the Project-based learning and STEM will be implementing to all the government schools over Cambodia, and it will be a very big change that we as the Liger’s students and stuffs had change.

Liger Senior Cookbook Exploration

My exploration is to create a cookbook for Liger students to use next year, when we move to the new campus. We didn’t started this as an exploration, we started it as an expertise. For the expertise, we were brainstorming about the ideas of the book, what kind of books, sections, design or styles we want to be included in the book. In the book we have many different sections such as chicken, pork, beef, slow-cooker, and etc. As the expertise passed, we had done some cooking and spreading ideas around the team.

IMG_2718
One of the food that we cooked.

When we started our exploration, we divided the job into 3. There are cooking, photography and book design. My role is cooking. You might think cooking is fun, and I am agree but cooking is very hard too. Sometimes my finger or my knee got burn, sometimes I got chili in my eye, or I cried because I cut the onion. Sometimes I got blamed from my teacher because I did something wrong, or I am being so slow. As my role is cooking I have to do research on the recipes that we want to put in the cookbook and then I need to order them to the chief (facilitator). After I got all the my ingredients the next day, I started to prepare my food like washing vegetable, cutting stuffs, and cook it! During we are cooking, sometimes we change the ingredients and direction in the recipes so it looks better than the last one. After we finished the food we give it to the photographers, so they can take the photo and send it to the book designer. The photos turn out good, even the taste of the food wasn’t nice. The book designer job is to create a book, to put all the pictures, description into the program called bookwright (blurb). But at the end, we realized that the bookwright can’t print the paper, so a member working with it on Indesign.

We also baked
We also baked

We had a trip to go the market. We go there to see the food, vegetable, meat, and finding some inspiration from it. I got some food when I see the vegetables and meats. During our Sharation day, we had cooked 2 recipes, it is Khmer Spring Rolled and Mountain Meatball.

For my assessment, I was getting really low- I had known that I will get low on my score, and of course I got the lowest score in the class and even the rest of my other Explorations. I am really tried to hold everything on my own, but teachers never see that. I am considered myself that I am always a person that people around really bored with and I always drive someone up the wall.

Crime in Cambodia (CIC) Exploration

This is the first Exploration that the students created their own. I’d got an Exploration with the other 6 students. My Exploration called Crime in Cambodia. When you heard the phrase, it sound like we learn about crime that is happening in Cambodia. But actually our class, we learn about law. The first idea that we had was to learn about crime. We wanted to go to the prison to learn from the people there but it was really dangerous for us and our school is to ensure that we are safe. We decided to learn about law of Fisheries, Forestry. But we focused on Fisheries the most. We had went to the ministry of forestry. We went there and we told the man that work in the ministry to tell us about law of the forestry. We left the ministry with some posters about logging and each of us receive a book about forest. We went to ministry of fisheries. The place where we met was like a professional conference. They have microphone, long tables and a lot of chairs for us to sit. A man came and he gave each of us a book about fisheries law in Cambodia and a book about fish. We had some questions about crimes that fisherman committed with fishing and about the law. So we had taking notes and discuss in the van. When we left the ministry, we rode back to school. In the van we shared what we had learned from both ministries. Every ideas was great. In the van, we also played some games. The game is to continue other team word that they gave. Example team A had the word “Enthusiasms”, team B should find a word that start with s which is the last letter of team A word. We played this until we had stuck with letter Y. There are not so many words start with Y but there are a lot of words that ended with Y. To make the other team stuck we usually added LY at the end of our words like extremely, deadly and etc.

Let see our documentary that we had created:

In class we started to collect and write all the information that we had got from our trip so we can put it in our blog. We also had a trip to go to Kep province. We had visited the Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) to learn about their place. They help preventing people from illegal fishing. There are 5 communities that stop doing illegal fishing and some of them are trying to catch the other illegal boats and illegal fishermen. Mostly there are Vietnam and Cambodia illegal boats. The problem is that people started to do over fishing such as trawling and using illegal materials to fish. Fishermen only want big fish, but when they do trawling, it get all the other organisms such as baby fish, crab, and lobsters. So they would throw that away and get the big fish only. When they use illegal materials to fish, it was destroying the other ecosystems too. If people keep continuing doing this, everything in the Marine will be destroy. It was very fun to go to Kep because we had interview the villager, the captain of the group who go to catch the illegal fishermen and boat, and the members in MCC. We had slept at a place where we can see the sea. We set the tents under the roof that was covering us from rain and sunlight. We ate food that we had packed from school. It was cold, so we heat it with a kind of cooker. The cooker was really hard for us to use because we have to push and pull the thing that help to heat the fire. Everyone was so active to prepare the food for themselves. Some of them was cutting bread, heated the food and organized plates. When we were free, we had played some games. One of us went up to the board to draw some logo of the company. The rest of us are the guessers. One of my friends draw a WING company logo. It was very funny because everyone cannot guess what she was drawing. But finally I guessed it right. Some of us draw some companies logos such as INSTERGRAM, WINE, TWEETER, NIKE, FACEBOOK and etc.

Oh I forget to tell you about the ride from Liger to Kep. Inside the van we played 21 questions. I think some of you know it. The game is a person try to think of one thing and then the rest of the people try to ask that person to know what she/he thinking. The questions is only yes/no questions and we can only ask 21 of them. It was very fun. Some of them were really easy for us to guess but some of them not. Like one of my friend thought of cloud. We were stuck with it. We also had stop[ed at a place to go to the restroom and bought some snack. Our RE (Residential Educator) bought a bag of bottles with water and some fruits. As we rode a long the road, the phone rang. Guessed what, our RE forget to giver the seller money. So our RE said that, our group will come back and give her back the money. I was laughing, I can’t believe it.

So after we got the information we had came back to Liger and gather everything into one file. We had put it on the blog so you can visit the blog. In class, we learned new articles about fisheries. We read some news about illegal fishing and problem of fisheries in Cambodia. We shared our ideas on the topic and discuss what it mean together. In the class we also had created a 6 minutes video talking about fishing in Cambodia. By the end of this Exploration I had given my grade on the 11 Change Agent Characteristics in Liger and the other two. We took 3 of them, Collaborator, Dot-Connector and Proactive and the other two (effort, determination and knowledge). But the thing we do was, I assigned by my own. 4 is the highest, and 1 is the lowest. I gave myself 2 on collaborator because I really knew that I really bad at it and there are some problems that I had with my teammate. When we did the video, I don’t know how to talk that made he/she knew what I mean and sometimes we got into fight. For the other characteristics I’m not so bad at it. I got low on Dot-Connector and my teacher said everyone in the team is really hard to do/show the Dot-Connector. It was a cool experiences to work with this team. In this team, I didn’t get a long so well with a student. Sometimes we fight and fight by talking until the group telling us to hold our tongue and start working. It also kind of fun and tired and insane, but this is how we work together.

Entrepreneurship Description

trip to expo

  1. What do the main thing that I learned in the Exploration?

The main thing and meaningful for me to learn is Entrepreneurship is I meet a lot of challenges. It doesn’t mean that I can not solve it but it really hard. What I learned from it is I get abonded of experiences and craziest thing happened to me. I think this is the best and greatest Exploration that I ever been learned. I will always remember this group because in class I always be the latest student. I hope next Exploration I will be a good student than this Exploration. But I still worry about one thing. I will had next Exploration with Soliday again. In class me and Soliday never have something right with each other. But I don’t know why after we having a conflict, Soliday and I is be friendly again. This is our habit.   In class we always fighting, yelling and competing. That why my teacher name Kichong said no fighting, no yelling and no competing is this class. I hope that I can do that. This day is the worst day ever for me in a worst day that I been had. Soliday said that I steal her dream, I steal her work and I steal everything, I make her dream fell. Then I though of course I steal her dream, her work but I gave her dream, her work back and she not take it. How can that be impossible! When I gave to her she just said no I don’t want to do it. Now she just play Minecraft and have fun with my friend in class but it is okay because she done her work. Kichong my teacher recommend to me to be teamwork a little bit because I usually easy to angry and the most good thing for me in class is I am proactive.

2.  write the 6 terms that you think is the most important thing for you. why?
The six terms that I think it is important for me is:

  1. Leader because in class I am a leader of the group. But my action is just normal, I never manage someone to do something. It normal for me to tell them to do what.
  2. Second term is iteration. I like that because it show how you would want to know more about other people. Even they don’t tell you anything, or talking with you. You try to know more about people feeling and what they need.
  3. Third is Big goal and small goal because it show how you processing, and manage which one you should do first to achieve your goal.
  4. Forth is Resilient because I need to be commitment and strong even though I meet a lot of obstacle and I will never giving up.
  5. Fifth is Integrity, I like this because I want don’t want to lie or cheat about selling and buying product to the customer. I should being able to be honest to the customer so they will like us more and happy to work with us.
  6. Execute also my favorite one too because it is tell me to do my plan, by not just keep and keep for a long time.
  1. If I could do the Entrepreneurship Exploration again, what would you do different? what product? what team? how to sell?

If yes, I will improve my team work, I will not be an angry person and I will know other people feeling even they don’t know my feeling. I will make a new product about something that better than this(I don’t know what can I make). About the team, I would want the same team even I hate this team because I want to know more about them and I can improve myself more better than before. Selling is also important too. I will contact with the companies that related to my product like calling, emailing and more. Selling is really hard because we want to make them interested at our product.

 Description:

In Cambodia Tropical Forest Ecology we studied about the Ecosystems in Cambodia and all around the world. We also learned about the many Ecological Relationships in  ecosystems.

In this exploration we want to change Cambodia by giving Cambodian people the knowledge about the forest and the animals in Cambodia from our experience. We also want to protect the animals in Cambodia from the hunter also to help save the endangered animals.

Our exploration took a trip to Koh Kong to learn more about forest in Koh Kong. When we were there we went into the forest and we slept at the campsite. On our trip we walked in the forest, swam at the waterfall and slept in the forest. We also went to Mangrove forest and then we came back to Liger. We also took a trip to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center to learn about the siamese crocodile and the moon bear and sun bear. At there we met a lot of people from Free The Bears and Flora Fauna International and they taught us about the animals in the zoo.

In the classroom we learned a lot of things and we worked on projects in small groups.   Our projects were about Ecological Relationships, different biomes around the world, Food Web in Koh Kong, Makey Makey Project, and Science Museum Blog. Our highlights are to understand how important the plants and animal are. Also to know about different organizations that help the animals and to understand clearly about their goal and how can they help Cambodia.

Refuse Plastic Description

WIN_20140606_142530 (2)
The bag I made from Pastic

Our exploration learned about refuse plastic. We learned about refuse plastic because we see in Phnom Penh that there is a lot of plastic bags. Plastic is everywhere around Phnom Penh. So we want to reuse the plastic waste.

See this presentation to find out what we had done!

In the first week we started to talk about the plastic. We talked about the things we know about plastic, what we want to know and what an idea or wonder is that we have. When we talked about this already, one person volunteered to write down a note.

When we do that already Max told us to do an experiment about the waste that we make in one week. He gave us one plastic bag. We shared our ideas, our thinking about how much we making waste in one day or one week. So after one week we shared all the rubbish and collected it together.

My understanding is that all the rubbish can be reused, reduced, and recycled. My challenge was that I forgot to take the rubbish bag with me all the time and sometimes I forgot about putting the rubbish in my rubbish bag. This assignment changed my behavior because I can remember that if somewhere there is not a rubbish bin I can put it in my pocket or in my rubbish bag. It surprised me that I can know how much rubbish I make in one day because all the time if I have rubbish I always just throw it in the rubbish bin. But it was less than the rubbish that I thought it would be. The rubbish that is necessary is 30% and the rubbish that I don’t need is 70%. Now I know that I need to change my behavior in the future. That means I do not forget about the things I need.

We also learned about the problem when burn, bury, throw away and landfill. The problem of burning the plastic is, it can make Co2. When Co2 goes to the atmosphere it can increase the climate change. It can make the greenhouse effect if we burn a lot of plastic. When the Greenhouse effect happens we can not get a lot of energy from the sun. The Sun gives us 100% of energy; we just get 70% of the energy and 30% bounces out to the universe. Another problem is when we burn the plastic it makes toxic gas. Toxic gas is very bad for us. It can make us headache, or heart problem, cancer, weakness, and mutation. Mutation means that you will get two heads or three arms like that. Bio accumulation is the problem too. It changes people’s hormones. When we burn the plastic it changes people’s hormones because it can make you fat or change our body. The problem of bury is polluting water and bad for soil. Plastic has chemicals. When we bury it the chemicals go into the soil so the plants can not grow on that soil.

The problem of landfill is it use a lot of space and is expensive to do. When we put the rubbish in the landfill it can kill the animals because animals come to eat that plastic. The rubbish in the landfill will make methane gas because the organic waste does not decompose. Methane gas is the gas that is 21 times more dangerous than Co2.

The problem of throwing the rubbish away is it will clog the drain. It means when the plastic is in the drain the water can’t go through so it will became flooded. Also it is related to the tourism because when tourists come they see a lot of plastic and they think that Cambodia is not the good place because it has lots of plastic at the road and everywhere. Sometimes it is dangerous for the people because when the people use transportation by motor or car, the wind will blow the plastic to their face so they can’t see anything. When we throw the rubbish it will make the mosquitoes because mosquitoes like to live in the dark place and have the water. We all were understanding the problem so we started to do more research about it.

This is the prezi I made for the effect of burn, bury, throw, incinerator and landfill.

Trip

Now let me talk about our trip. On Friday, 16th June 2014, my refuse plastic team went on a trip. On the trip we went to BKK (Boeung Keng Kong) market, City mall market and Cintri. We went there because we wanted to interview, survey, and do observing. We prepared our questions on Thursday to help us do that work. When we arrived there we split into teams. We interviewed and surveyed the sellers and the buyers. They talked about the plastic. They said sometimes plastic is good for us to carry thing like clothes, shoes, plates…. . But sometimes it is not good for our health because plastic has chemicals and when we put the hot things like porridge it can make the plastic get thin so it is easy to tear. When I went there I felt happy but sometimes I felt scared because I didn’t know the people that I asked. My highlight is that I could interview the people and know more ideas from them. When we finished we went to Olympic Stadium at 12:00pm to eat lunch. We ate breads and cookies. When we finished eating we met together and did some reflection. At 01:35pm we went to Cintri to ask questions about plastic. We arrived there at 2:05pm. The staff at there took us to the conference room. When we met one man he introduced himself. Later one man came and told us about the plastic and about their company. Cintri is the company that goes to collect the rubbish outside in the city. Cintri’s challenge is that when they go to collect the rubbish the people don’t organize their rubbish so it is hard for them to collect. Another thing is that when they go to collect the rubbish it is hard for them to push the trash when there is sand on the road. Sometimes when the people have a celebration or party they just throw the rubbish away. It also showed about people’s behavior that they don’t respect the rules, they just follow other people. If one person puts the rubbish not organize then other people will do that too. But now Cintri tries to make rubbish bins for putting the rubbish and tells the people to have good behavior. People can change their behavior by respecting the rules and helping change Cambodia by not throwing the rubbish away.

This is the prezi I made for our trips.

In class

In class we interviewed the people about the plastic. They came to our school and taught about the plastic to us. One man tried to make the community people understand about plastic. Another man talked about the plastic too. He tried to make us know more and we asked questions to him.

Next we started to learn about solutions about plastic waste. Our solution was reduce, reuse and recycle. But next lesson we learned about 5D. Next we did research and to solve that problem. Now we started to make things. Next we started to develop and tried to deploy. It means we need to reduce the plastic. We need to use less plastic. You can buy the reusable bags for putting things when you go to the market. When we have a lot of plastics we need to reuse them by making some things like bags and flowers. When you reuse the plastics it is better than you taking the plastics to throw away. You can recycle the plastic if you can’t use it again by bringing it into the factory. It is a very good thing that you need to reduce before reuse, do reuse before recycle and do recycle before throwing it away.

After we learned about reduce, reuse and recycle we started to do a survey in the Liger community. When we went there we divided in four groups. When we surveyed, a lot of people said they burned the plastic or threw away. The organic waste they will not compost. People just threw away that waste to everywhere. They didn’t know when they threw the rubbish it would affect the environment. But in the community people like to use the reusable bags when they go to the market.

Prezi I made for the 3R

When we came back we started to reuse the the plastic. So we started to make something new from the plastic like bags. I wanted to do this because I want to help and reuse plastic because Cambodian people now are using a lot of plastic and don’t care about the environment in the future. When I do this I can put my money or my pencil in it. People want it because I made a design and the importance of my ideas are that it was made from plastic. So I can reuse plastic and help the environment to be good.

How to make a bag from recycle plastic!

If you want to make a bag you need to have plastic, scissors, needle, thread, iron and some of the pictures on the plastic. The first step is we take the plastic and then cut the bottom and the handle of the plastic out. After you cut already you can take it to iron. You can make your bag five to six layers. If you have the big plastic you can iron and iron it again for six layers because we want it to be strong. When you iron you need to be careful because the iron is so hot. Also if you want your bag to look really nice you need to make the plastic smooth when you iron. Next is you bend it for three layers. It means you can bend any style. For me I bend the long one to the top and then I make the space for their lips. When you bend already you take the needle to sew the two sides of the bag. You can sew any style. When you sew already you can cut the pictures from the plastic to put on the plastic to look nice. To do that you can take the picture and then put it on your plastic so you iron it with plastic because when you iron, the picture will stick on your bag. If you want to make the button, you put that button and sew it on the lip of bag. When you did that finished you can take the scissors to cut the two slits at the front side of the bag. So you can take the string to tie it with the two slits like the circle and then you can connect it with the button. So you can have a nice bag for putting your things.

When we did that already we sat and talked about our reflections to friends about doing this project. I appreciated to everyone in my refuse plastic class that they worked hard and tried to wait for the iron.

After that me and my two friends started to work on the presentation to share to all Liger students and the staff in Liger school. When we did the presentation we felt like scared because we didn’t learn so much about the plastic and also other presentations they learned already so it is hard for me. But it is okay I was very happy to share my ideas to other people and show that Liger is the good school to teach the lesson.

Food Systems Description

Food group

  • Exploration Name: Food Systems
  • Exploration Dates: March 10 – May 2
  • Number of Students: 15

A food system is the cyclical process of growing, transforming, packaging, transporting, cooking, eating, and recycling food. Sometimes we can skip some of these steps. For example if we eat a mango that grows from a tree at our house we are skipping packaging, transporting, cooking, and transforming. This is an example of a local food system. An example of a global food system is chips that have ingredients from different parts of the world and are packaged, transformed and transported all over the world.

In our class we learned the difference between all three kinds of soil. They are sand, silt and clay. We started to grow the seeds. The seeds have grew, but we have not taken its to grow in our raised beds yet. In one day we have to give the water to the plants 3 – 4 times. We learned the six steps to grow the seeds, from laying the toilet paper to moving them in the tray. We have learned the part of the seeds. There are seed coat, embryo and cotyledons. We learned about the fruits and vegetables. We also learned about global and local food systems. Global is the food that is all around the world. Local is the food that is near. Ex: If we are Cambodian and buy the food in Cambodia that food is the local because it is near where we live. Ex: If we are Cambodian and buy the food from Malaysia that food is the global because it is far away from where we live. Also, we learn about the pros and the cons about local and global food systems.

We took four trips to learn about Food Systems. The first trip we went on Organic farm. The owner shown us how to grow the seeds. In his farm there are ten different types of seeds: lettuce, fruit plants and herbs. Also, he told us that insects and the weeds destroy his farm. Weeds are the things that you don’t want. Ex: In the farm have the grass that grows, the weeds is the grass because the farmer doesn’t want that to grow in their farm. New technology is that they cover the soil by the plastic because when we put the compost and the water will not go away. Compost is made out of the animals poo mixed with soil and rice husks. The second trip we went to Natural garden store. In that shop sell vegetables, snacks, wine and ingredients. The owner had taught us how to find where the food came from. The owner said that some of his fruits, vegetable and cookies are bought from France, America, Thailand, North America, Singapore, Germany and local. He has own farm in Kampong Speu and at Kampong Som. The third trip we went to University Agriculture. In there we learned about hydroponics. The guide told us that hydroponic is the new technology in Cambodia. Hydroponics means growing on the water. At there we saw lots of lettuce that grows on the water. The last trip we went to Rice Mill. We learned about the different rice in Cambodia. Also, we learned the difference between brown rice and white rice and how both of this rice is good for us.

At Phnom Penh Post

(1) Why do we have newspapers?

(2) Historically, what have newspapers sought to do?

(3) How is the purpose enhanced or diminished by external factors (freedom of speech, infrastructure)?

(4) What do reporters do and what are their ethical responsibilities?

(5) What is the process of creating a newspaper from start to finish? What role does technology play?

Description:

In our newspaper class we had a lot of hard things to do but there were fun things to do too. The first thing we did was get introduced to some of the old and famous newspapers. Later on we got the name of one of the newspapers and did the research in pairs or groups. On Friday afternoon we had assembly so we did our presentation one by one. Everyday we learned new things about newspapers and it was very exciting. The most hard and exciting part was we made our own newspaper about our school. Also we went on a late night trip to the Phnom Penh Post printing press at 10:00pm. It was so late we got to sleep in the teacher apartment. The name of our newspaper is Liger Post. We sold it at NISC, ICan, coffee shops and restaurants. At the end we made about $280. We gave some to the Documentary group to do the bike race and some to the orphanage at Siem Reap. Each student on the team also got some money, about $8 each.

The liquid
The liquid

Description: In our water group we learned about the pH of water. The full words of pH is Percent Hydrogen. That is the kind of scale that people use to measure the acids and bases. The scale of pH is 0-14. From 0-7 is acidic, 7-14 is basic and 7 is neutral. The hydrogen (H+) is acid and hydroxide (OH-) is base. When we learned about pH we did the experiment with 13 liquid things. For ex: the coca-cola and pond water. The coca-cola was 2.0 so it means acidic. If we drink it a lot like every day we would get sick but if we drink in 1 week only 1 it will be good. The pond was 10.0 so it means basic and if it has a lot of basic like this it also not good for our health either. So we can eat or drink only higher than 7 to 9 or lower than 7 to 5, so it not really have many bases or acids. In this class we also studied about algae. Algae is the kind of plants that live in water and it uses the sun as it food. When this plant lives in water it will make water become basic. We studied our own pond at Liger to learn about this. One other thing that we learned was the water cycle. We learned when the sun rises then it does the evaporation with water. When water goes up it is not yet become the clouds but when the temperature is cool then it makes condensation so it becomes the cloud. When the cloud in the sky catches the cool temperature it will become the rain again. To learn about water we went on the trip to RDI. RDI is the place that makes the water filters to sell. One thing that we learned from there is why they made this RDI place because they saw that some people here don’t have the clean water to drink so they can buy it to get the filter and clean for them. Another reason is when they sell the water filter they sell as cheaply as they can to help the people in Cambodia.
