Iron DeFishiency (Iron Deficiency)

iron-deficiency

Iron Deficiency is the first Exploration I’d done in Year 5 of Liger. It is also the second best Exploration I had so far. In class we learned a lot of things, many and tons of things. In this class, we’re focusing on Anemia caused by iron deficiency. Our teacher found this organization which helped to reduce this health problem in Cambodia called Lucky Iron Fish. We worked with them to create a presentation to do a workshop at Siem Reap which was exciting! After doing workshop, we created a video but we’re focusing on Khmer audience since there is no video for Khmer people to watch about Lucky Iron Fish. Watch down below.

Siem Reap

We spent about 6 hours to drive from Phom Penh to Siem Reap. When we arrived the hotel, everyone putted their stuffs away and that evening we relaxed for a while then came back together to practice our presentation that’ll happened in the next few days. We got dinner at the place nearby. At night we went to PUB Street, and Night Market. I saw a lot of clothes, paintings, furniture, necklaces, bracelets and many things and I think Cambodian made those. I didn’t buy anything cause I don’t really want to. My teacher told me that we should find something small, cheap, and meaningful and I didn’t find it at all. But I did enjoy seeing those, one thing I really like was to see the quotes that they wrote on the shirt and some of them were really funny and some of them I used to see before in internet. We continued walking a long the street, seeing different people. Mostly I saw foreigner not really Cambodian maybe it was a tourism place at night.

My friend and I at PUB STREET
My friend and I at PUB STREET

The next day, we visited Angkor Wat which was one of the most famous temple in Siem Reap. We went there to see beautiful sunrise. After that we walked around the temple to see many different sculptures and we learned about the history of the temple from our Khmer teacher.

At Angkor Wat.
At Angkor Wat.

We left Angkor Wat and continued to a place called Landmine Museum. I saw real mines that used during the war! It was a pleasure to be there cause I learned from it. I listened to a podcast that was about mines in Cambodia, watched a documentary and read amazing different stories people met.

All the mines.
All the mines.

In the afternoon we visited a place called Kbal Spean. It was connected to Koulen Mountain. We walked about 2km to see the waterfall there. Acutually we didn’t see the waterfall, we saw a small one that has carving under it. We sat for a while than walked back to our bus cause we need to continue to another place. Walking a long that mountain was really hard for me cause there are many big rocks and we didn’t really have a proper road.

our group picture at there!
our group picture at there!

We tried to leave Kbal Spean as soon as possible because we need to have a tour at the Future Khmer Children. Sometimes we made fun of the acronym of this title, it was FKC but sometimes we confused to call it as KFC which was a restaurant and we always laughed about it. We wanted to have a tour there cause we’re going to have a workshop there and we saw many kids learning computer, English, sewing and music. I think it was a very cool place.

img_3445

The next two days, we’re focusing on the workshops. We did four of them, 2 in different villages, morning and afternoon. In our workshop, we taught them the importance of lucky iron fish, anemia caused by iron deficiency, eating healthy food and how to use the iron fish.  We then distributed the fish to each family. We hope that they will use it in every food they cook to help reducing anemia in the country.

Coding

I think I started to like coding and I think I actually sign up for it or something. Anyway, I learned two days, Monday and Tuesday with Alli, our teacher. For the first day of class, Alli tought us some basic code and gave us some exercise to do like, program your friend to do something. About 1 week passed, we started to use code.org to learn how to code. I used to use it before, the hour of code. In that website, I learned how to program my character to do the thing that it wanted us to complete. It was fun, I even create a game from it! A floppy bird game. But then I went to learn code in Code Combat. It is a website where we try to code our character to fight against something or to solve problem. Then I went to more advance coding. I started to learn more about code in Codehs.com . It was also a useful website. I think it’s really really useful. I learned a lot and now I know how to code some basic web page. I know how change the size of the letters, like <h1>Hello World</h1> This is what we saw in the code editor, but if we review it, it’s going to look like this.

Hello World

Singing with Trish

DSC_5132

We have singing with Trish every Wednesday’s morning and it became one of our expertises. In this class, I enjoy singing with my friends, Trish and her partner (Will). We used to sing some songs, but it’s not pop-songs. It’s like a short traditional song. I knew how to sing one African song! We do go outside to sing the songs. Right now we are working on writing a song for Liger, but isn’t finish yet. When it finished, I will share to you all.

3 days of Kep

At the end of March, I and included all the people in the school went to Kep. Before going to Koh Tonsay, we went to Jasmine Alley located on the mountain. The first day of Jasmine Alley was eating and relaxing because we were tired from driving far from Phnom Penh. This place is beautiful and really natural. On the evening, I got to eat pasta with bread. It was scrumptious.

The next day was a really excited day. We were divided into 4 teams.  After that we got a piece of paper from our teacher telling us what to do. Our team got Rock Cycle. We have to do a skit about it, but we can’t say anything during the skit. It was really fun and I was very enjoyed. After all the team identified and practice their skit, they come to perform to everyone. The audiences will guess what is it at the end of the show. No one guess my team right, well maybe the skit was too hard for them to understand.

We had play many games and preparing for the mission on the mountain at the afternoon.   We learned about GPS, Photos Hunt, Nature (plants) and Trust. All of them are my favorite activities.

A person fall freely and the teammates need to carry that person.

I like my team (plants) and it looks like we all work together really well.

At the afternoon, we started our mission. We walked about 8km (but I felt, I had walked 17km) a long the mountain. We observed many natures such as insect, animals, and plants. We saw many big trees. I tried to take the picture of the butterfly flying but that was a very hard thing to do.

Big tree that we had seen.

In our team, we had GPS to look for the treasure that we are finding. The treasure was money in the box. The treasure was hid in a place that we need to figure it out by following the mark in the GPS. Unfortunately, our GPS was broken. So we have to look for it a lot of times. We got the first 3 treasures. But on the forth treasure, we didn’t find it. In total we found four treasures. Sometimes we were really tired so we have to rest.

After a long walk, we had arrived the place that we first started. Everyone seems very very tired. After a while, we had created our own art from the plants that we had collected during the walk. My team, we did a tree which included many others plants/fruits. We sang a song that our team created during the walk.

“Oh plants, oh plants, we gotta find the plants”
“On the mountain, we gotta find the plants”
” Near the ocean, we gotta find the plants”
“With our friends, we gotta find the plants”
“With Mr.Jeff, we gotta find the plants”

Our tree.
Our tree left.

We also watched the other team performance/presentation for their plants. It was awesome! It was a very big day.

The next day, we woke up and went across the ocean to visit Koh Tonsay. When we arrived there, it was smelling not really well. I saw a lot of dead fish floating on the water. I tried to ask the people there about what happened, but they say they didn’t know too. When I arrived the place, I set up my bag into the house that I slept. I went back and I saw everyone was swimming. I was laughing because it looks really fun. I didn’t go to swim because I have no feeling to swim, but earlier before launch I swam.

At night we had looked at our old pictures since the first year of Liger. We also listen to a podcast made by Liger students about Ghost/Religion. I was a bit scared because it was at night. After that most of Liger students was dancing with Khmer musics. I was sitting reading my book. I was too tired to dance.

DSC_2745

After the dancing, we all went to bad, at night I still read my book with my other friend. She really good at reading, she understood a lot. Tomorrow, was the day we left the beach. Well, I need to get ready for school too. We got noodle for our breakfast, and took a last picture with each other. It was the end of the trip, we went back to Liger.

Comprehension Check

  1. Did Greg get to spend time with his best friend over the summer? Why or why not? How does Greg feel about Rowley’s holidays? What are some reasons he gives?

Greg didn’t get to spend time with his best friend over the summer at all because his best friend, Rowley, was on a vacation to South America. Greg feels that he is not really interested in other people’s holidays. Another reason is whenever Rowley comes back from his holiday, he always talks a lot about one thing that can make Greg sick. Good.

  1. What happens between Greg and Rodrick after Rodrick drives Greg home from school?

Greg called Rodrick a big jerk and so it got physical and they used energy from their bodies to fight.

  1. How does Greg’s mom try and fix the problem? Does it work? Why or why not? What do you think she should have done instead?

Greg’s mom tries to fix the problem by telling Greg and Rodrick to write down what they did wrong, and then draw a picture to go along with it.  It didn’t work because they both wrote and drew things that they didn’t do wrong. They just said I will not do this, or do that.

For my idea, I probably would want Greg’s mom to tell them “stop fighting each other, you two are brothers.” Maybe let them say sorry to each other in front of Greg’s mom and tell them to say what did they did wrong in front of each other. Good ideas.

  1. On page 24 there are two idioms. First, Greg says that Rodrick is “holding something over” his “head.” What do you think that means? Then, he says that he wants to get “some dirt” on Rodrick. What do you think that means?

I think the idioms mean:

There is an embarrassing moment of Greg’s over the summer, and Rodrick knows about it! So he will put the moment on Greg’s head, so if ever Greg wants to say something about Rodrick he will spill that secret out. Excellent!

Example: Rodrick: If you tell about my secret I will spill your embarrassing moment to the world.

   Greg: (Grunting) Great example!

When Greg said get “some dirt” on Rodrick he means: he wants Rodrick to get the embarrassing moment too, so Greg can talk about that (to scare Rodrick). Another reason is he wants the dirt to be on Rodrick, he wants to fight him, he wants to throw dirt on Rodrick.

  1. What are grunting noises? What is something that might make grunting noises? Why does Greg’s dad tell Manny that he heard some of them coming from the furnace room?

Grunting noises are the low noises made by animals or people. (In The Princess Bride movie, a man always said the word inconceivable and makes grunting noises). Greg’s dad told Manny that he heard some of them coming from the furnace room because he doesn’t want Manny to break anything in that room. Good.

  1. How is Greg’s and Rowley’s secret language the same as the one from the movie? How is it different? Tell me your opinion of their language. Was it successful?

How those two languages are the same:

  • Those sentences are nonsense. Example: YOUR-PA DAD-PA
  • SMELLS-PA LIKE-PA A WOMAN-PA!
  • BEEGLE BODDLE BRUP BOP!

It was not successful because Rowley’s dad cracked the code. My opinion of their language is it was quite ridiculous and funny and sometimes I can use this language to talk to other students in Liger, but if they are smart enough, they might crack the code.

How it was different is:

  • Greg’s and Rowley’s secret language is easy to crack the code but the language in the movie is really hard because the words are nonsense.
  1. What was Greg’s dad’s strategy for not watching the movie and working on his battlefield instead? Have you ever tricked someone? Tell me about it.
  • He stuffed a bunch of pillows under the blanket on his side of the bed to make it look like he was asleep. Great grammar!
  • Sometimes when I don’t want that person to know what I or others talking about, I just whisper to another person about something secret. I just talk about another topic, so that person will think I talked about something normal, not secret.

CamCuculture Shock Description

My round eight Exploration was Culture Shock in Cambodia. Visit our blog!

We all were very interested about it and it talked about the culture in Cambodia. The first day we learned about the meaning of culture shock.
What is culture?
Culture means how people live to show their society or to show what their society looks like.
It shows about people’s life, traditions, religion, clothing, food, festivals, ceremonies, etc.

What is shock?
Shock means feeling surprised, nervous, sad, and it talks about feeling homesick, lazy, etc.

Line graph

Culture shock

Why I show this picture is because it talks about the culture shock. In this picture, it shows when you go to somewhere you’ll be happy and want to live there (it is called Honeymoon) but two or three days later you will feel culture shock because you cannot fit the place that is new for you. You will think it is very hard to live there. (It is called Culture Shock). But when you start to learn more and more about the place that you live in, you feel better than before (it is called Adjustment). Then maybe one month or one year later you will feel normal and you can fit into that place (it is called Mastery).

On the next day we made a poster about when we came to Liger, did we feel culture shock?
This is my poster that I made with my friend Rithy and my other friends’ posters too.

Everyone poster Rithy and Samady poster

We all were happy and worked hard with our poster. On the third day we began our learning project:
We chose the lesson that we would like to learn about in our Exploration. This is the 5 top topics that we chose:
Way of life – Social studies
Temple and Culture relationships
Greetings – Respect
Khmer beliefs
Khmer ceremonies

We also chose other 5 topics that we would learn about if we had time.
Important Khmer language
Behavior in pagodas
Khmer food
Khmer Traditional Clothes
Khmer Traditional Medicine
_________________________________________________________________

We also programmed our BIG trip to Siem Reap.
We left on Monday, 20-25.
On the first day we walked around temples.
We went to Cambodia Cultural Village.
Had fun, visited organizations.
We also interviewed people on Thursday and debated about some topics and discussed about our small trip to the pagoda.

Way Of Life
80% of people in Cambodia live in a rural area. They like to do farming there. Most houses are built on stilts to protect from the flood. Most people live in a group and build the house near the pagoda in a rural area.
Poor people living in the city is worse than people in a countryside (rural area) because of conflict and violent crime. The middle-class in Cambodia is not not rich and not poor. Rich and middle-class people in Cambodia show their value by material and their social standing. Hundred of villas are built for political and business elite. Most people in rural areas wear simple clothes and material like sarongs, kromas, palm hats, mats to sit on, flip flops… . Women dress modestly in cotton shirts and ankle-length skirts or dresses woven out of silk for religious festivals.

We also learned about the social class. What is social class? They have classes such as lower class, middle class, and high class. They have different levels of jobs and it talked about levels of life and how people are living in their society. Middle class is the class that is connected to the low class and high class and the level of people. (This paragraph about social class in Cambodia is all our ideas. Then our teacher told us what is social class. Social class is the term to show the social position of people which is differentiated by assets, occupation, income, and power.

This is the picture of the social class that I made. (Click to see clearer)

Classes in Cambodia

________________________________________________________

In class we also had a debate too. Why we wanted to debate is because we can share our ideas to friends because we have different ideas, and (connecting) one idea to other ideas means we all know more.
Our topic was: should Cambodia have a social class or not? My group was pro. I hated pro, I just wanted to be con, but teacher already said my group is pro, so then I listened to him. Teacher let us have some days to prepare for the debate. Then we all were prepared and our debate began. We were debating and asking questions. It shared the knowledge a lot to everyone in my class, even when we have a debate between one group and another group. At the end of the debate we also had conclusions too and teacher told us which group won for this debate tomorrow. Tomorrow came, my group (pro) won, The points between the both groups is kind of the same, my group just had one point more than the con group. Here is the information that I got with my pro group:

Why is it important or good for Cambodia ( to have three classes of people)?
– It can show people poor so the organization will know/ they will help them.
– People will have a competition
– Economic will work
– People can know and respect to the people who more good than
– Education will decrease if there are a lot of poor people
– Poor and rich people help each other
– Communicate

This is my conclusion at the end of the debate:

Based on the citation on this topic, it is a very important thing to have social classed in Cambodia. We agree about this topic because it can help Cambodia to change and to develop about agriculture, economics, education, competition, communication, and greets.

_________________________________________________________________________
In class we also interviewed the staffs about cultures. We divided into four groups, each group had different jobs. After we were already did the interview we shared what we got.

We need to pass four provinces called Kampong Chhnang, Posat, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey. It take us to go there for 10 hour. It so long and it can make us bored. But in the bus we was singing and watch TV. We ate our dinner at Kompong Chhnang. At the evening we arrive Siem Reap and sleep at the guest house called Mong Papa. We ate dinner near there and it was yummy. Here is some pictures that we took when we were traveled.

Trip to the Temples

Taprom temple
Taprom temple

We went there to learn about Angkor Wat and other temples like Bayon. When we at Angkor Wat, we did a survey about the tourists that come to visit Angkor Wat. It was difficult sometimes because we really hard to understand what do they mean. We also visit Ta Phrom Temple. I saw a tree grows on the top of the temple, how amazing is that? We

At Angkor Wat
At Angkor Wat

had a guide to teach to us about the pictures on the wall and it was amazing because we know about the relation of Khmer people with other country like Cham, Chinese, etc… . Along the road that we walked to the temple, I also see some people selling food and some people play the traditional music. Walking along time like this make me really hurt my legs but one thing that interesting to me is we met some _DSC0366students that come to learn about the temple too. We also went to visit one Khmer Noodle shop to eat noodle, it was yummy.
At the evening we went to Bakeng Mountain to visit sunset and to do some more interview. One thing that we was laughing a lot when we the interview is when we ask for permission from the tourists, they thought we were selling stuff to them and so they just ignore it and always said no. But Vornsar, one of our classmate try to tell them that we are not the seller, “We are coming here to interview you some questions”. So they understand and said yes. After we did the interview, it was raining. How could it be possible. The rain come- so the sun down-we can not see the sun and so we were on the top of the temple under the drop of rain. It was fun though because everyone can get the cold of the weather. About 40 minutes later, the rain stopped and the sun rises. I and my friends was so happy but the thing is we can’t see the sun because everyone there had blocked the sun, they are too tall.
It was enough, we learned a lot so it was time to come back to Liger.
That is one of the most fun times I had had.
